This article will give you a quick overview of everything you need to do to get started on Upwork. Upwork can be a great place to make money online, especially if you’re starting.

And I know this because I pay thousands of dollars per month for people to help me with my online businesses. This includes writing. Doing voiceovers editing videos, and doing graphic design and Upwork is excellent.

If you have a skill that can benefit people or businesses, I will be showing you how to determine that in just a second, but first of all, let’s get into exactly how to make money online using. So here are the tips for starting to make money on Upwork as a beginner.

1. Determine your niche

Step one is to determine your niche, and this is what you’re going to help people with on Upwork. How to Make Money On Upwork For Beginners In 2022   And what I recommend doing is asking yourself, what do you know, what can you do to bring value to other people or businesses, and what can you help people with?

And a great way to find ideas of what you can help people with is to go to upwork.com and then go to the top bar right.   And it’ll give you many different ideas on what you can help with. With.

So, for example, if you want to do something related to design in creative, you can click it, and it will open up all these different individual jobs that you can help people with, including voiceover artists, video editors, and animators.

And if you know how to do any of these skills, you can potentially make thousands of dollars per month on Upwork. And if you click to see more skills, it’ll show you a ton of individual skills right here, and feel free to go through a lot of these to see what you can potentially help people.

And to make money on Upwork as a beginner, I recommend going to, let’s say, you can help people with Photoshop and seeing what people usually charge per hour on some of the top freelancers that come up right here.

This way, you can ensure that you’re choosing a job with a lot of demand in which companies or people are willing to pay a high price per hour for you to make as much money as possible on Upwork.

And if you don’t personally have enough skills yet to help people on Upwork, you can always keep building them up by watching YouTube videos and buying courses on places like Skillshare or other sites.

And anything you invest in educational material will likely pay off many times. On what you will earn through Upwork now to give you some ideas with skills. Most of the people personally hire people to do on Upwork.

They hire people to write YouTube scriptsdo the narration for YouTube videosand edit together YouTube videos and Instagram videos

Make YouTube thumbnails. Make Instagram posts and images, manage the website, and then a bunch of miscellaneous admin work, including adding people to their Facebook group after they buy my course, replying to emails, Instagram, and DMS.

There’s so much potential in terms of the number of different jobs you can help people with on Upwork.

2. Create your profile and optimize it

So to do that, you go to Upwork, sign up and then click I’m a freelancer looking for work, apply as a Lance. Fill out all of your information.

It will ask you for a lot of information, and I recommend giving them all of it because it will verify your identity, making it more likely for clients to hire you for your profile photo.

How to Make Money On Upwork For Beginners In 2022

I recommend putting a very professional photo of you smiling as your profile photo. This will show potential clients that you are experienced and presentable.

To get a good picture, you can even consider hiring a photographer to take a portrait of you to have the best photo.   And then, we want to optimize our profiles with texts that people are likely to search for to hire us.

So to get a ton of ideas and examples, when it comes to optimizing your Upwork profile, I recommend going to Upwork and going to some of the giant jobs related to your job.

So let’s say, for example, you’re a voiceover artist, in which case you’d design in creative and then go down to voiceover artists, right?

And some of these top voiceover artists that show up right here likely have their profiles very well optimized. So you can get many ideas when it comes to optimizing your profile.    And here’s exactly how I would take a look when writing your profile.

And for example, if we go over to Oliver’s profile(assuming) and open it up, as you can see at the beginning of his profile description, he says he’s a professional voiceover artist.   So he gets straight to the point.

He doesn’t list a million different skills that he can help with. He sticks to his niche, which is doing voiceovers. And I would recommend the same. I wouldn’t try to advertise that you can do every skill globally.

Instead, I would focus on one or two or just a couple of very complementary skills and then market myself as an expert who can primarily help with that skill.   That way, you’ll get a ton of more clients.

For voiceovers and in writing your description, ensure to include the keywords as often as possible. And on top of that, I would recommend putting together at least five to 10 different individual pieces of work that you make yourself.

Put it into a Google drive folder, share it so that anybody with the link can view it, and then put that link in your profile so people can look at your portfolio. Also, I recommend putting it within the portfolio section of your profile.

And I recommend filling out your skills with the most related skills you will be doing. So, for example, if you’re doing voiceovers, you’ll want to choose skills like voiceover voice talent and your specific accent; when it comes to doing that and everything else related, and to get ideas, you can always look at other freelancers when it comes to filling out your own.

3. Find jobs to apply

To do that, go to Upwork, scroll down and then find freelance jobs worldwide. Upon clicking, what I recommend doing is looking for what are called fixed pricing jobs.

How to Make Money On Upwork For Beginners In 2022

And by doing fixed pricing jobs in the beginning, ideally, you can do a lot of jobs quickly to build up the number of reviews that will serve as social proof when it comes to more people hiring you in the future from Upwork.

So under delicate freelancing jobs, you go to the specific skill you’ll be helping people with. Let’s say it’s animating. So you select animator right there. And as you can see, many people are looking for animated videos.

And as you can see, this is a fixed-price job where they’ll pay you $125 to do this. So I recommend doing a bunch of these jobs, even if it’s under what you eventually want to be charging.

The goal here isn’t to make a ton of money initially but to get a ton of great. So that will then let you make even more money long term.

4. Apply for every job you see

And this one of the essential steps, in the beginning, is to apply for almost every single job you see. I recommend putting aside at least one or two hours per day to sit at your computer or phone. And apply for every single one of the new jobs that are coming up.

You want to use them as soon as possible because when clients post jobs on Upwork, they’re typically on Upwork for another hour or so after that, and they’re going to be checking the first people who apply for those jobs.

So you can stand out in the beginning by applying for every single job as soon as possible and being one of the first applicants, and don’t expect to make an Upwork account, and people will magically hire.

That’s not how it works to succeed and make money with this. You need to be applying for jobs yourself, especially in the beginning. Still, eventually, the goal is to have an optimized profile with optimized keywords and start getting a ton of reviews as well.

And then Upwork will promote your profile for you. And when people search on search engines, they are looking for the best freelancers regarding a particular skill.

You will ideally show up, and as for how much to charge, I recommend going on Upwork and seeing what other people seem to be charging per hour or fixed rate job and then charging a little bit below the average in the beginning.

And like I said, the goal isn’t to stay at this average over time but to do just a little bit below the average and raise our prices over time.

5. Apply  for jobs the right way

I have a formula I’m going to share with you that you can use to apply for jobs the right way.

  • Number one is to get attention.
  • Number two is to give an example of work that you’ve done in the past relating to the job.
  • Number three is to tell about what separates you from other freelancers out there.
  • Number four describes why hiring you is the best decision for them.
  • And number five is to give a call to action.

And now, let’s go over a practical example of exactly what you would say when applying for a job to have the best chances of getting the job.

Let’s say we’re applying for a video editing job for somebody named Oliver. Here’s exactly what I would write within my application.

Step number one is to get attention, and I would do this by saying the client’s name.

You see a lot of different freelancers on upward. They use copy, pasted applications, and things that go out to every job they apply for. I don’t recommend doing this.

I recommend writing an original application for every single job you apply to. So to get their attention, I recommend simply using the client’s name. But, unfortunately, a lot of freelancers don’t. So I would say something like, hi Robert, I just saw your job. And I think I can help you with this step.

Number two is to give an example of work you’ve done in the past relating to this job.

I would do that by uploading a couple of different jobs that you’ve done in the past relating to this, or simply ones that you’ve done on your relating to this, just taking some videos you’ve edited together yourself, putting them into Google drive folder and then sharing it on the application.

And you could say I’ve done a lot of editing. So that’s exactly what you’re looking for. And here are some examples, and then share them.

Step number three is to tell about what separates you from other freelancers.

There are a bunch of different ways you can do this. I recommend starting up some social media pages and even a YouTube channel related to what you’re doing.

Because if you can show clients that you can teach other people to do what you’re doing. That is a good sign that you know what you’re doing and that you’re an expert within your field.

So if you had a YouTube channel, you could say something like I have a YouTube channel where I help people with video editing, and I know exactly how to edit the videos you’re looking for.

And you can check it out right here. This would help you stand out from other freelancers.

Step four explains why hiring you is the best decision for them.

You could say something along the lines of, if you hire me, I’ll make sure that your videos get edited together. The first time, this frames it as a benefit for them to hire you.

Step number five is to give it then a call to action.

You can say something along the lines. Then, let me know if you want to move forward, and if needed, I can provide additional ideas to help you achieve your video editing goals.

I’m looking forward to hearing back from you or hopefully working together; another example of what you could say could be that I can edit a small test video for you for super cheap or free.

And if you want to get this job or it’s like your first job. You can go above and beyond and edit together a free video for them, without them even asking, depending on the assets they gave within their job post.

And I have hired a lot of freelancers. So who’s gone above and beyond and done this?

Step six to make money on Upwork is a bonus tip: outsource the work.

Yes, you can pay other people to do the work for you and then sell that work to clients at a higher price—therefore being a middleman and earning money in between this way.

You don’t have to be the one who does all of the hard work for the client. But instead, you’re providing value for the client by connecting them with one person or many people under you.

Who can do much more work than you can personally, giving them value because they don’t have to manage all these clients? And then it gives you a ton of value in that you don’t have to do all the hard work.

And to find people to hire, you can go to Upwork and hire people who charge less per hour than you do. Or you can go to places like five or hire people.

And if you’re doing something like graphic design, you could even hire a website called kapa99, which offers unlimited graphic design for a monthly fee. I think it’s like $399 a month.

I use it for many of the thumbnails across my different channels, and they allow you to resell their work and act as that middle man to outsource the job and not do the hard work yourself.

And they also offer unlimited revisions. So if a client asks for something to be changed on the particular piece of graphic design you’re doing, you can send that over to kapa99, and they give you a Trello board in which you manage all of this.

And it makes it super simple, and always test hiring somebody before using them with your clients. Because the last thing you want to do is hire somebody terrible, and the quality goes down.

You want to ensure that you can still provide your clients with the most outstanding value possible. And always remember, if your client wins, then you win too. So to break it down, make a couple of thousand dollars per month.

This is really what you have to do. I recommend working either for free or super cheap in the beginning to build up many reviews and build relationships with clients. And then you can raise your prices over time.

Once you have a few dozen reviews, I recommend asking yourself, how much would you be happy making from Upwork? Let’s say, for example, it’s $3,000 per month.

And if you work 40 hours per week at $30 per hour, that would be $1,200 per week, equating to $4,800 per month. And let’s say you pay people $1,800 per month to do all the work for you.

Then you can still profit $3,000 per month. And all you have to do is talk with clients and manage the freelancers under you. And imagine if you could build this up to having multiple clients under you, each paying you several thousand dollars per month.

This could add up to be a lot of money, and you could even potentially create an agency in which you manage a ton of different freelancers to do.

Your clients provide them with a ton of value and even expand outside of Upwork and grow a big company. And when it comes down to it, the key to doing this isn’t necessarily any of these technical steps.

Still, instead, it’s about building relationships with clients that will ideally last a lifetime. It’s about presenting yourself as a professional.

Build up your reviews and don’t wait for clients to come to you; instead, apply for as many jobs as possible, as soon as possible after the jobs are posted.
